He told himself he was being dramatic. People with imagination could weave nightmares from silence. Still, the more he read, the less comfortable he felt. The transcripts included a scene where Kaira stood beneath studio lights and described a place she claimed she had visited in her sleep: "A room—no doors, just screens. On the screens, we watched ourselves. When we looked away, someone else looked back." The tape log that followed recorded another crew member whispering, "We never turned those cameras off."

The progress bar crawled forward; the rain tapped a steady tempo against the window. The first episode arrived as a scrambled archive. His antivirus blinked warnings he ignored. Inside the files were not video files at all but text logs, production notes, and raw footage transcripts from a show that—officially—no one had made. Each file had a producer's name crossed out and replaced with initials. Footage timestamps stopped and started with sudden gaps. Names repeated: Kaira, Deven, the Director—only ever "D."

A breakthrough came from a source they hadn't expected: the Director's original crew logs, posted anonymously on a fringe board by someone who signed only as "E." The posts were raw, angry, written in the shaky hand of someone who had watched colleagues alter each other's memories until relationships frayed. "We were told we were creating honest art," E wrote. "We were told the Shift would be theory, a trick. It wasn't. It was a door." Attached to the post were coordinates to a warehouse on the city's edge and a plea: "Burn the drives."

He shrugged and kept reading.

Vega's expression softened. "Maybe. But also—maybe—we offered people the chance to retrieve memories they had lost, to see pieces of themselves they had misplaced. Some reported relief. Some reported rupture. It is impossible to control the direction of attention."
